With the help of decorator Candice Koller (pictured), this Bedfordview family gained an entrance hall that’s both welcoming and practical.

“ALTHOUGH IT WAS SPACIOUS, OUR ENTRANCE HALL WAS dark and there was nowhere to put things as you came through the front door,” explain the owners. “Plus there was an awkward step at the bottom of the stairs and we wanted to make use of what was essentially wasted space.

HOW IT WENT FROM DRAB TO FAB To solve the problem of the awkward step, Candice Koller of CW Interiors designed a timber unit, which was installed over it. In this she included alcoves for storage baskets while the easy-to-clean composite stone top provides a surface for displaying photographs and objects.

“We kept the design simple and the new wood panelling behind the unit enhances the new, light colour scheme. We also replaced the dark Persian carpets with custom runners that fit the shape of the floor,” says Candice. To add subtle interest and warmth, she clad the staircase wall with wallpaper by Scion, which brightened the area. A new plug point allows the owners to switch on a table lamp at night giving the entrance a very welcoming feel.

NOW THE ENTRANCE HALL IS bright and airy and provides much needed storage space for keys, diaries and other ‘grab and go’ items. “We love coming home as it’s such an inviting space,” say the couple.
